Junior League of Boca Raton, Inc. 2011-2012 Community Projects

The Junior League of Boca Raton, Inc. supports a wide variety of projects by providing funds and trained volunteers. In recent years a special emphasis has been placed on the needs of the family, and particularly the welfare of our community's children. Current projects include:

Vegso Community Resource Center (VCRC)
2007 Vision Award from Association of Junior Leagues International

The Vegso Community Resource Center (VCRC) serves as a resource center for South County nonprofit organizations, enabling them to research funding opportunities without losing valuable staff time to travel. The Center's Resource Library houses the Foundation Center's Cooperating Collection core materials and other resources that may be useful to nonprofit organizations seeking funding and/or information about nonprofit management. The Non-Profit Training Committee Grant Library is open to the public 40 hours per week. Specialized training workshops for nonprofits are offered by the Junior League of Boca Raton (JLBR) in cooperation with such groups as the Nonprofit Resource Institute, the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties and the Donors Forum. In The Pines
2005 and 2011 Community Impact Awards from Association of Junior Leagues International

The Junior League provides funding and volunteer support to improve the living conditions of agricultural workers and their families who reside at In the Pines North and South residences in western Delray Beach. Family members receive basic life skills training, after school homework help and participate in educational and recreational community activities. Community Support Fund (CSF)

The Community Support Fund is the granting arm of the Junior League that allows community organizations within the Junior League's service area to apply for grants up to $2,500 to assist in funding their programs and initiatives. Florence Fuller

Reading is the foundation for all academic learning. The Florence Fuller committee is reaching out to all the children of the Florence Fuller Centers who are falling behind and preventing the younger ones from ever being in that position. JLBR launched an intensive Literacy Enhancement program to add to Florence Fuller's academic program. This program includes a Pen Pal Program, Storytelling classes, KidzLit Teacher trainings, and Family Reading Nights. KITK (Kids in the Kitchen)

The Junior Leagues' KITK (Kids in the Kitchen) is an Association-wide initiative of the Association of Junior Leagues International designed to help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition. By joining together to make an impact on the future health of our youth, the JLBR is committed to empowering today's youth to make choices that help them lead healthy lives. JLBR's KITK (Kids in the Kitchen) program illustrates the power of voluntarism to address community problems on both the grassroots and international levels, integrating their nutritional and physical education activities with disadvantaged children in our other community projects. Community Garden

The community garden is a special partnership between the Junior League of Boca Raton and the City of Boca Raton. JLBR is excited to give Boca Raton residents another beautiful creation reminiscent of the Children's Museum, the Historical Society, and Town Hall built by JLBR in years past. The City of Boca Raton has entrusted JLBR to design and construct a community garden in vacant land near the library. The community garden will provide the city environmental sustainability, natural beautification, and a supplemental food source for Boca Helping Hands. Spirit of Giving Network (SOGN)

The Spirit of Giving committee serves as the liaison between the Junior League and more than 50 local nonprofit organizations participating in the nonprofit agency the Spirit of Giving Network, www.sognetwork.com. This committee coordinates the annual holiday gift drive which serves more than 3,000 children throughout our local community and they also assist in the Back to School Bash providing school supplies to local children in need. Done In A Day (DIAD)

The JLBR provides volunteer support to qualified agencies for short-term or one-day projects or events; referred to as Done-In-A-Day (DIAD) community service projects. DIAD events offer a wide range of rewarding volunteer experiences to JLBR members while providing a significant volunteer support service to community nonprofit organizations. Community Issues Research Committee

A team of JLBR members research new community project possibilities and determine their viability as a future project for the Junior League, as well as grow and develop the current community projects we service. The committee coordinates roundtable discussions and task force meetings with community leaders and local dignitaries to identify unmet community needs. Public Affairs (PA)

PA is an issue-oriented committee that advocates for community needs, League interests and for the focus areas of the State Public Affairs Committee. This project improves the JLBR's ability to oversee attention and involvement in our League's focus areas. Current focus areas are: Children aging out of the foster care system, Gender specific programming for girls in the juvenile justice system, Childhood obesity and nutrition, Booster seat requirements for children over the age of three, Human trafficking, Cyber crimes and cyber bullying, and the Guardian ad litem program.

Small Community Projects

The Small Community Projects initiative was created to further meet the needs of community organizations looking for assistance. The committee will implement between three and five community projects per year that require both volunteer time as well as a financial component. These organizations must meet the mission of the Junior League of Boca Raton. We are currently accepting new projects. Do you know of any non-profits that may be in need of our help? Junior League of Boca Raton Diaper Bank

The Junior League of Boca Raton Diaper Bank was created to serve a huge need in our community. One in three American mothers struggle to provide enough diapers for their babies. Low income parents cannot take advantage of free or subsidized childcare if they cannot afford to leave a day's supply of disposable diapers at the childcare center. Diapers are distributed on the third Saturday of each month at a partner organization location. To learn more about the JLBR Diaper Bank visit their website, www.JLBRDiaperBank.org.
